Student Paper Awards

To encourage student members of ICSA to participate in and share their research at the symposium, ICSA will offer awards  for outstanding student papers. The deadline to submit applications is April 1, 2025.

Award Information

Eligibility

The applicant must be an ICSA member at the time of manuscript submission and a doctoral degree candidate in any term during the academic year of 2024-2025 at an accredited institution. They must be able to register for and present the submitted paper at the 2025 ICSA Applied Statistics Symposium. The paper must not have been published or accepted for publication at the time of submission.

Available Awards

Up to six winners (five Student Paper Awards and one Jiann-Ping Hsu Pharmaceutical and Regulatory Sciences Student Paper Award) will be selected. Each winner will receive a plaque or certificate, a cash award of $550, and free registration for a short course. Winners will be announced by May 15, 2025.

Manuscript

The manuscript should be prepared using Biometrics or JASA guidelines for authors. Excluding tables and figures, the manuscript must be no more than 20 double-spaced pages, with margins of at least one inch all around, and the font size no smaller than 12 points. The research work must be relevant to applications in a variety of fields, including biomedicine, finance, business, etc. The manuscript may be co-authored with a faculty advisor and/or a small number of collaborators, but the student must be the leading author.

Submission of Manuscript

The submission should include:

  • a cover letter
  • a separate page containing the paper’s title and abstract, along with the name of the author(s), their institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone/fax numbers, and email address
  • a blind copy of the manuscript. It should include the title and abstract of the paper, but information identifying the author(s) (e.g., name and affiliation) should be removed.
  • if the student is not yet a member, a copy of the completed ICSA membership application form

All materials should be packaged into a zip file and emailed to the ICSA Student Paper Competition Committee at studentaward2025@icsa.org with the subject line “2025 ICSA student paper submission – [student name]” no later than April 1, 2025.

Withdrawal and Disqualification

  • Applicants are free to withdraw their submissions at any time.
  • If the same paper is submitted to other competitions and wins another award before the ICSA announces the winners for the symposium, the student should notify the committee immediately. The committee may then ask the student to withdraw the paper.
  • Students may submit the same paper to both the student paper competition and the poster competition. Students who win a student paper award will not be considered for the poster award, but they can still present the paper as a poster, and they will be invited to give a brief oral presentation of the paper.

Review and Selection

Each paper will be judged by at least two reviewers, with the following criteria:

  • The manuscript should be well motivated by an application to the specific field(s).
  • The methodology developed should be applicable to the motivating problem. Inclusion of an application to a practical study will be favorably considered.
  • Organization and clarity of the presentation will be considered as well.
